Quality optimisation of steel works slag by injection of quartz sand

Producing steel in a converter results in large quantities of slag with a high content of free lime and magnesium oxide. Due to the amounts of these constituents the slag is not firm and therefore cannot be used for road construction.

When materials containing SiO2, such as quartz sand, used foundry sand or crushed glass, are injected the content of free lime and magnesium oxide can be selectively reduced to below 0.1%. Slag conditioned in this way is a valuable basic material for road construction.

Having built the world's first industrial plant, Polysius possesses the requisite plant engineering and metallurgical knowhow for the specifically-directed reduction of free lime and magnesium oxide contents in converter slags.
